What Have We Here ?

Carpet weaving has an essential place in the culture, economy, and art of the “Rug Belt”, a region of countries that stretches from Morocco, through the Middle East, and ends in northern India. Persian carpets, first exported to ancient Greece and revered by great writers of the time, are specifically admired for their strong foundational warps and wefts, and a variety of painstakingly handcrafted elaborate designs. Most well-known motifs range from archetypal, geometric, floral, and some even contain cosmic references to space and stars. These works of textile art are typically woven with wool, silk, or cotton and can take anywhere from weeks to even years to complete once a weaver commences the process.

Our collection of diamond-motif rugs hails from the majestic Khyber Pass, a navigable route through the Hindu Kush mountains linking Pakistan and Afghanistan that was once part of the ancient Silk Road. The diamond iconography seen throughout the carpet resembles the peaks and valleys of the mountain landscape that has played such a revered role throughout history. These carpets are as durable as they are beautiful and are known to last for generations with proper care and attention.

How to Use It ?

Kilim rugs range from typical, utilitarian functions to symbolic purposes, to art hanging in a home or gallery setting. The true beauty of these carpets is that they could serve several of these purposes across many lifespans. We recommend paying close attention to the motifs and colorscapes that were intentionally chosen by the weaver and visualizing where such a piece would be suited best in your space. If the choices are abundant, try unfurling this work of art in the heart of your home, far from the dirt and chaos of the outside world.

Why It Matters ?

Kilim rugs are hand-knotted and made from hand-spun wool. They are woven utilizing a flat weaving technique that results in a low pile and flat texture making them ideal for both contemporary and traditional tastes. Thanks are due to the wise weavers who chose this sustainable, timeless technique and material so that we can preserve and enjoy this tapestry of both art and culture for decades to come in a variety of interior settings.
