What Have We Here ?

As seen with other design titans like Prouvé or Breuer, for designer Terje Ekstrøm, the lines between industry and artistry often blur. Trained as an upholsterer and cabinetmaker, Ekstrøm’s popularity catapulted after a stint at Oslo's Art and Design National School due to his postmodern, eccentric designs that mirrored the culture at large of Europe in the 1970s and ‘80s.

As seen with the wiggling frame of this iconic chair, Ekstrøm was inspired by modern movement and used this iconic chair's shape to challenge the traditional commonplace ideas found in Scandinavian design at the time. The Ekstrem Chair's geometric frame is a prime example of one of Norway's first—and most popular—postmodern designs.

How to Use It ?

The Ekstrem Chair is fully functional and cozy to boot! Sit traditionally with your back resting against the main support, sling your legs to the side and nestle in the open space as if you are being held, or flip it completely backward with the front of the torso against the chair’s back. The wholly unique shape of this chair not only allows for myriad sitting positions but undoubtedly acts as a functional piece of art in any room it resides.

Why It Matters ?

The Ekstrem Chair is upholstered with a made-to-measure custom textile from the beloved Norwegian brand, Devold. The fabric, aptly titled ""Knit"", is knitted in one continuous thread to provide the support and elasticity required for such a bespoke shape. Devold has operated since 1853 and abides by sustainable and environmentally friendly internal operations from the farms it sources from to the mills it produces at.
